AI is not for experts

Emma Thompson does not need Clippy Jr.:

“When I’ve written something and put it into a Word document, it’s constantly saying, ‘Would you like me to rewrite that for you?'” Thompson said.

The UK national treasure added: “I don’t need you to [expletive deleted] rewrite what I’ve just written. Will you [expletive deleted] off. Just [expletive deleted] off!”

This reminds me of a story David Pogue told on some podcast 10+ ago. Or that I heard someone retell. I can’t find a source.

This a recreation from my memory. I don’t even know if this is a true story. But it’s a good one. It goes like this:

In the 80s, Pogue was helping Mia Farrow learn how to use a word processor to write a book. Farrow asked him to turn off all sorts of features to remove clutter in the UI. A minimalist editor as we’d call it now-days.

“What is this red squiggly line under this word?” she asked.

“That tells you the the word is misspelled, and it will fix it for you.”

“That word is not misspelled. David, turn that off. If I didn’t know how to spell, they wouldn’t have hired me to write a book.”
