why pair programming improves how large organization develop software, a case study
Pair programming has been around since the late nineties and boasts ample research and anecdotal evidence proving its effectiveness. It’s not limited to programming, either; it can also be valuable in roles such as product management. However, despite its benefits, it remains less commonly practiced than one might expect. Pair Programming in the Department of…

Webinars are great – how to make good webinars, and how to watch webinars
Webinars have a bad reputation. They’re usually boring presentation that require you to give over your email address. I do a lot of webinars and watch a lot of them: they don’t all have to be crap! Here’s my take on why webinars are great, how they can go wrong, how to make them interesting,…

Monolithic Transformation, the webinar
I’ve got a newly recorded webinar, covering my Monolithic Transformation book: The cliché we all recite is that technology isn’t the problem, culture is. Put another way: if the hardware and software are fine and fresh, it must be the meatware that smells. Come hear several de-funking recipes from the world’s largest companies whose meat…

Rethinking Enterprise Architecture
In the cloud, DevOps, agile, whatever is hot and new era, the role of enterprise architects is rarely addressed. There’s probably plenty useful for them to do still. I’ve been trying to figure out what those things are recently. Also, see the slides, which are usually more up-to-date. There’s also a recording from DevOpsDays Charlotte.

docker has a straightforward CLI that allows you to do almost everything you could want to a container. All of these commands use the image id (ex. be29975e0098), the image name (ex. myusername/webapp) and the container id (ex. 72d468f455ea) interchangably depending on the operation you are trying to do. This is confusing at first, so…

Why Did Docker Catch on Quickly and Why is it so Interesting? | The New Stack
Excellent piece. Too bad my folks didn’t get around to writing it first, but at least now it doesn’t need to be written. The insights in developer relations are great. At a meta-level: It’d be interesting to “crowd source” analyst research agendas by just bundling up pieces like this and original work and having that…

Why developers are the king makers
Last week I was at on a Dell event panel representing Dell cloud think. Our moderator asked if developers are really in the driver seat – here’s the answer! What else would you expect from a RedMonk? ;> Also, Andy Rhode’s car fleet analogy is a good one for explaining bespoke IT vs. cloud IT.

DevOpsDays Austin
