Still sick today, feeling much the same. This episode is another one with mostly content form elsewhere.
Detachment: tactics to stop thinking too muchWe used to call it “compartmentalization,” which can have a bad feel to it. Anyhow, in this from Jessica de Bloom & Merly Kosenkranius:
Detachment is your need for psychological disengagement from effortful tasks, such as certain work-related activities or care-taking responsibilities. To experience detachment, you must not only stop the demanding activity itself, but also stop thinking about it, taking a mental distance.

Platform Engineering Probably Doesn’t Mess with CaaS and IaaS
MidJourney: man who is sick with children crawl all over him, sitting on a green couch, cinematic, 8k, dutch angle, action dramatic epic.I’m in the middle of some kind of cold today, so I’m spending most of my time staring at the wall or sleeping.1 This means it’s a good time to catch up on my directory of PDFs and other long form pieces. Here’s some excerpts.
Also: happy Valentine’s day!
These new platforms will be great as long as we pay attention to application developers
Remember that a platform is for application developersSam Newman has a great take on the dangers of forgetting the point of developers platforms. As you may recall, I think the same: infrastructure builders get easily distracted by building infrastructure when it’d be more helpful to pay more attention to developer usability and needs.
This is inevitable, and all too human. The point is not that they’re “bad,” just that we all need to build up the habit of always thinking about the customer.

The Bad ChildFor the most part, I think of therapy as gaslighting. The work (usually in my experience, at least) is about two things (1) making you accept the situation you’re in, and, (2) making changes in how you act and think. The part where you’re encouraged to talk more and “let people” in is a third thing. All of these have a common theme: it’s your fault, because you’re doing it wrong.
Slip, Slap, Slop - and more found delights
New at the Rijksmuseum room at Schipol AirportBoomgaard te Eemnes, by Richard Roland Holst, c. 1888-1895One of the delights in the international part of the Amsterdam airport, Schipol, is a large room that the Rijksmuseum fills with paintings and other art works. There’s usually, say, six or eight paintings in there. There's a new exhibit, landscapes. Here’s the newest one they have. The description on the card next to it is as magical as the painting itself:
Jalapeños are pickled, but pickles aren't jalapeños
Confusion Over PicklesBurger King in Antwerp, Nov 14th, 2018.In Ghent, for a quick dinner, I went to Burger King. I ordered a burger - the “steakhouse” or something, which was a mistake because as Texan, I can’t stand sweet BBQ sauce, but it was fine. When I went to the counter to pick it up, I asked for extra pickles. This is something Taco Bob taught me to do one year at Devoxx in Antwerp and it was magic.
The more kubernetes you use, the more frequently you release software
The more kubernetes you use, the more frequently you release softwareFrom the CNCF 2022 survey. The CNCF has a new kubernetes survey out. We discussed it in more length in today’s Tanzu Talk News (it’s not published yet, but subscribe to it and you’ll get it tomorrow). Here’s some notes of mine:
I did not make the time to read the raw data. When I have in the past, it’s always been a treat.

Generic Plan for a Starting a Platform Team in a Large EnterpriseOn Friday, I had a discussion with someone just starting to think about how they’d put a platform in place at their very large organization. I have my ever evolving prattle about that, of course. But rather than talk about (only) that, I wanted to give a very concise, prescriptive, “never mind theory and decks with one big word or pictures on each slide, here’s what you can do right now,” sort of list.
Kubernetes is great, but it's been a 7 year distraction
Kubernetes is great, but it’s been a 7 year distractionOpening questionOr, here if that’s your thing.
Shaking the snow globeWhen you watch the making of kubernetes documentary, you’ll notice a strange character. Time and time again Amazon is referred to directly or indirectly. But, Amazon’s spokesperson in the documentary is a silent, cinematic drone shot of an Amazon building. (This is my memory, at least. I apologize if I am dead wrong.

VMware’s app dev stack for kubernetesHere’s an overview of how one organization uses our platform to get development teams working together better, API sharing and use, setup up project templates, automate deployments, and run on multiple clouds:
WastebookMy Internet is down so I can get very little work done. However, once I started playing these choice tracks, I felt like my labor contribution alone were going to increase GDP by two basis points.
