This is the private cloud in a box that Dell doesn’t call a “private cloud.” It’s converged infrastructure. Adding in Puppet is great and certainly makes it feel more cloudy.
Dell has spent a long time, with several acquistions, trying to get ActiveSystems just right. As TPM sums it up:
Active System Manager is largely based on a sophisticated set of infrastructure management tools that Dell took over and rebranded after it acquired Gale Technologies in November 2012 for an undisclosed sum.

Going beyond a simple ordering system at Applebees
“It could show me things I can eat based on my activities for the day,” he notes. There could also be sensors built into the tablet that regulate things such as ambient lighting and noise, he notes. “There are a lot of things a tablet can pick up beyond showing you a menu,” he says.
Of course, more sophisticated applications based on user preference require customers to log-in and have their behavior tracked, which not all may greet with enthusiasm.

Dell IR: we're going to go hang with the nerds now
One of the more significant changes is that our financial results will be restricted to current institutional debt investors, prospective institutional debt investors and debt research analysts. The financials will only be disclosed under non-disclosure agreement (NDA). Given the restrictions on our financial disclosure, we will not be discussing our financial results with broad audiences at large equity conferences as we have done in the past. You will see us more active and participating in technology-focused conferences where we will provide updates on our progress as a technology leader and discuss our latest innovations and solutions we are delivering for customers around the world.

Things were different back in 2003, but developers still were kingmakers
From Rachel Chalmer’s 2003, coverage of Novell buying “SuSE” (451 client access required):
Historically, Novell’s Achilles’ heel has been its inability to keep its independent developer community happy. Some fled NetWare for OS/2, which IBM botched in its turn. Meanwhile, Microsoft was happy to embrace and pamper NetWare and OS/2 burn victims as independent software vendors for Windows. Now developers are asking themselves whether Novell has learned its lesson, or whether it’s about to make the same mistake again.
