ChatGPT answers your questions about the new unlimited PTO policy - a FAQ

Another example from my playing around with a new talk idea. Here, I ask ChatGPT to write a FAQ for a new unlimited PTO policy. See more commentary on this in my newsletter today. You’d need to polish this up into one email, of course, e.g., move the citations list down to the final one.

Prompt

We have introduced unlimited PTO in my organization. What are five questions about it I should anticipate from employees? Also, please write answers to each drawing on the following research: (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8987765/) (https://hbr.org/2017/08/what-one-company-learned-from-forcing-employees-to-use-their-vacation-time) (https://hbr.org/2015/06/how-to-make-unlimited-vacation-time-work-at-your-company). Use bullet points for the answers and cite the research with markdown footnotes.

  4. Taking PTO should not have a negative effect on performance reviews, and employers should encourage employees to use their PTO. [4]
  5. Guidance on how much PTO to take can vary from organization to organization, but generally employees should take enough time off to stay healthy and productive. [5]

Questions:

  1. How is unlimited PTO different from traditional vacation policies?

Answer: Unlimited PTO is different from traditional vacation policies in that it does not have any set number of days off per year. Employees are free to take a day off when needed, without needing to save up days or use them all in one lump sum. This allows for greater flexibility and autonomy, which can result in improved morale and engagement, increased productivity, and improved work/life balance. Studies have found that employees who are given more freedom with their vacation time are more likely to use it and report higher levels of job satisfaction. [1, 2]

  1. Are there any restrictions on taking PTO?

Answer: Generally, there are some restrictions on taking PTO such as a minimum length of employment in the organization or a maximum length of absence. This is to ensure that employees are not taking too much time off or abusing the policy. [2]

  1. What are the benefits of unlimited PTO?

Answer: Studies have found that the benefits of unlimited PTO include improved employee morale and engagement, increased productivity, and improved work/life balance. Employees who have access to unlimited PTO are more likely to use it and report higher levels of job satisfaction. Additionally, the company is likely to experience cost savings due to reduced turnover and improved employee performance. [1, 2]

  1. How will taking PTO affect my performance review?

Answer: Taking PTO should not have a negative effect on performance reviews. Employers should encourage employees to use their PTO, as it is linked to improved job satisfaction and productivity. [3]

  1. Is there any guidance on how much PTO to take?

Answer: Guidance on how much PTO to take can vary from organization to organization, but generally employees should take enough time off to stay healthy and productive. Studies have found that workers who take more regular vacations are more likely to be productive and are less likely to experience burnout. [4]
