Getting ChatGPT to write better cold-call emails for inside sales

I get a lot of insider sales emails offering up services that an enterprise software marketing person like me would ee interested in. So good job on targeting I guess!

I thought I’d see how the old ChatGPT does with improving them. It’s also a good experiment into tuning the output. I don’t know what the word is, but as you’ll see, by “tune” I mean make suggestions of things to change. I picked a random pitch email for this. Fantastically, it’s pitching AI stuff!

Spoiler: it didn’t really work that well. The original email was actually pretty good in comparision. I think ChatGPT went a little too formal. But, check out the end an approach I used to make, I think at least, better.

I’ll put my prompts in bold, the AI outputed the non-bold text:

Could you rewrite this pitch email to be better?

Here is the original email:

Hi Michael ,

It’s getting harder to get audience’s attention and conversion. And in this climate marketers have to solve this problem with fewer resources.

Our research suggests marketers who repurpose content like webinars into short, punchy videos and collateral deliver a bigger impact at higher velocity and lower costs.

Key is – deliver more impact with less (expensive) content.

We make it possible for B2B marketers to do it using our simple yet powerful AI-assisted platform.

You can learn more here. Masters of Marketing like Adobe and Zoom use our product.

I’d love an opportunity to demo it to you and your team.

We’ll also show you real examples from your industry.

When is a good time to get on your calendar to discuss this?

Thanks,

Name Redacted

Hi Michael,

We know that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to capture and retain an audience’s attention and drive conversions. This can be especially challenging for marketers who are working with fewer resources.

Our research indicates that content repurposing is a great way to maximize impact and minimize cost. For instance, transforming webinars into short, engaging videos can be a cost-effective way to reach more people.

We have created a powerful, AI-driven platform to make content repurposing easier than ever. Our platform has been used by leading marketing companies such as Adobe and Zoom.

I would love the chance to demonstrate our product to you and your team. We can also provide examples from your industry to show you how it can be applied.

When would be a convenient time for us to arrange a meeting?

Thank you, Name Redacted

That’s good, now could you personalize it a little bit? For example, let’s say the receiver has obviously been trying and that their videos have good content. The problem is just that it takes a lot of time to get them posted to all the sites and analyze the best moves to make. Also, can you make it sound more natural, like someone actually typed this - maybe even a tiny typo somewhere that makes it seem real.

Hi Michael,

We’ve seen that you’ve been working hard to get your videos out there with great content, but it’s taking a lot of time to get them posted to all the sites and to make sure you’re making the best moves.

OK, feel free to make up some things for the next part, but can you put in two references to customers that this worked for and some kind of indication of how much better things went?

OK, now can you make it less authoritative, kind with a tone like, “I think this might be useful to” or “I wanted to see if you think this will help.” Also, change the opening to be a lot more casual - it sounds too stuffy.

Hi Michael,

I’m sure you’re aware of how hard it is to grab and keep an audience’s attention and drive conversions today, especially when you’re working with fewer resources.

I wanted to see if you think this might help - our research suggests that repurposing content like webinars into shorter, punchier videos and collateral can have a bigger impact at a faster speed and lower cost. We’ve seen customers have great success with this - for example, Adobe and Zoom have seen a 40% increase in engagement and conversions since using our platform.

So, in this case I don’t think it made it that much better. In fact, the original has a much more “natural” tone. The (to me, at least) weird spacing of it all makes it seem like a human me. And then constructs like “Key is - " in the sentence “Key is – deliver more impact with less (expensive) content” give it a real natural tone. You can almost see the inside sales person sitting there just typing this out!

Still, you can see how the ChatGPT thing is really useful for “workshopping” ideas and content. As I was saying on the podcast this week, if you’ve ever worked with an executive who’ll go up on a whiteboard and draw out a bunch of ideas…and then ask you to go make slides of it…and then you go back and forth on the slides over and over…the ChatGPT thing is good for that…you, the human, escaping the shit work of behing the executives content-mule.

I bet it could ghostwrite books pretty well.

What I’d want to do to improve it would be to feed the AI a bunch of content about each individual I was sending the email too. For example, you could feed it our YouTube channel, and the results of their customers (Zoom and Adobe, I guess). Then it could talk a little bit about actual videos we’d done and compare them. I don’t know what else it could do! It’s pretty good at contrast and comparing things, like and 7th grader would be.

I think that’ll be the key all this getting “really scary/powerful,” when you can shovel in your own content.

OK, so, after writing this, I thought I’d try one more thing. What if we made it shorter?

OK, now can you shorten it, like, four sentences?

Yeah. I think that’s it.

When I’ve used the AI to shorten things, what I like about it is that it doesn’t care. It has no emotional attachements to deleting text like I would. The ability to cut out text is one of the best benefits of having someone else read your writing. I mean, I probably should have asked the AI to shorten my typing above, you know?

Asking ChatGPT to shorten text is a really good usecase. (I wrote that myself! See I can shorten text like the previous paragraph myself! Humanity is safe!)

Having a podcast, I get a lot of pitches for podcast guests. I should try some of those next.
