The Kids Love Avatar

While here at the inlaws over Christmas, I’ve watched a ton of this kid’s show called “Avatar: Last of the Airbenders.” It’s a pretty complicated Kung-Fu serial about a world that seems divided along elemental lines: fire, earth, water, and air.

The kids love it!

And why not? The whole premise is that this pack of about 4 teens (who act like Tweens) have special powers and have to go trough a seemngly endless picadoric quest that finally ends in a big, movie length fight with “The Fire Lord.”

Legendary!

In the meantime there’s all sorts of Nick-level romance: a quick peck here and there, often after some shassy remark, with the recievier of the kiss getting that Anime wide eyed look of astonishment. Also, there’s a whole succesion to the throne fight throughout, all 100 Years War style.

The last interesting aspect is the mixing of what looks like Chinese, Indian, and Native American cultures and races; I’m sure I’ve missed some other ones.

As I recall there’s a whole card game that goes along with Avatar, and these dudes would be insane not to have video games to go along with it too.

Austin's Very Own. Episode 16 – Small Talk Tips on the Way to the Dog Boarder's

Michael and Kim are up early in the morning to drop the dogs off at the boarder’s house. They discuss conversational etiquette, which includes a long description of the inner workings of “small talk” by Michael.

We recorded early in the morning, so it’s a bit dark at first. Do not adjust your set!

Austin's Very Own. Episode 14 – Goin' Down to Polvo's

While driving down to Polvo’s – a nice Tex-Mex-y place in South Austin – Kim and I record an episode on a brisk weekend afternoon. After eating, we give a quick review of Polvo’s.

Xmas gifts: stubby Star Wars figures

Here’s one I never liked as a kid: little figures that don’t have movable arms and legs. I liked the little GI Joe guys the most put of all my toys, so all the other figures are judged by their realisticness. Odd sidenote on the GI Joes: I had a ton Playmobile figures that I also liked; I always had those figures cast as the “civilians.”

But back to these stubby Star Wars guys: one of my nephews loves these things! He was lucky enough to get 4 packs of ’em.
