The Tyranny of the Average:

The Tyranny of the Average is the following: if you get people together in, for example a team —
and that’s why, by the way, I feel we’ve been brainwashed on teamwork — if you get people in a
team, if you get people in a corporation, you can be almost sure that those people are not going
to come up with the best ideas and implement those best ideas. They are not going to come up
with the mediocre ideas either. What they are going to come up with is something in the middle.
And that’s what they are going to implement. Why? Because it’s the Tyranny of the Average. We
have strong evidence that when human beings — men and women — get together and live
together, they don’t go for outstanding ideas in projects. They don’t go for mediocre ideas. They
go for the middle way.
